The Lord of Hosts is With Us
VOLUME VIII Number 4 NOVEMBER 2 0 0 6

Psalm 46 is a wonderful Psalm to read at all times. It is the psalm that Luther used when penning “A Mighty Fortress.” It is a psalm of assurance and comfort for us in our times of need.

The psalm reminds us that we are not God. We are not in control in the world around us. Even if we have responsibilities in our home or at work or with our extended families, we use gifts that God has “instilled” and “installed” into us. We are surrounded by His presence. It thus also reminds us that we are not God-forsaken.

There are many things that can threaten us. But God is in the center of our life, has gifted us with eternal life, and gives us peace that this world cannot give. Jesus has not only died and risen but He is with us always. We are surrounded by the “everlasting arms.”

When we think we are going it alone or are afraid of the future, we can be reminded that God knows us by name. As you read the psalm realize that He has protected us from so many dangers from the natural world and from the world of those who hate Him. The real battle for our eternal destiny is finished and the blessings of peace with God are gifted to us by His grace. We can settle down with Him. We can work really hard at telling people about His grace.

NRSV: Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. 6 The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 "Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth." 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

May His comforting words help us as individuals and as a congregation.

In Christ our Lord and Savior,
Pastor Thomas Trapp
